Baker Act (The Florida Mental Health Act of 1971) - Local Receiving Facilities

This act is a means of providing individuals who may be harmful to themselves or others with emergency services and temporary detention for mental health evaluation and treatment when required. Examinations may last up to 72 hours. Having someone admitted under the Baker Act can be done on a voluntary or involuntary basis. An “ex-parte” form must be completed at the County Clerk’s Office.

NAMI - National Alliance on Mental Illness

 Provides support for those individuals or family members affected by mental illnesses such as depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, anxiety, and other disorders. Educational meetings, online support groups, and in-person support groups are offered. In collaboration with Centerstone, suicide support groups are also provided. The local Victim Assistance Unit advocates meeting the needs of victims of crime or witnesses to a tragic event. It also assists families experiencing a sudden, traumatic death because of suicide, overdose, or traffic accidents. In addition, it provides crisis intervention, emotional support, community information, and referrals. All services are free and do not require a police report.
